One of the best-loved fishing locations around the city is the 50,000-acre Lake Murray, a man-made reservoir that features striped and large-mouth bass, bluegill, crappie, red-ear sunfish, and the occasional catfish. The lake is managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, which has built numerous fish attractors for those fishing from boats, as well as several fishing piers. With more than 500 miles of shoreline, the lake offers countless access points for shore anglers.

Anglers interested in catching trout will likely have their best luck fishing the Saluda River, which meanders for 170 miles through South Carolina. Other fish to be found in the Saluda are small-mouth bass and striped bass; the river also hosts one of the largest concentrations of stripers east of the Mississippi in the summertime.

The Congaree River, formed by the merging of the Saluda with the Broad River, provides some of the most abundant catfish populations around Columbia, featuring blues and channel catfish, as well as flathead catfish. It’s not at all uncommon to catch catfish weighing 20-30 pounds in the Congaree.
